The temple’s distinct nomenclature—Ufrata, translating to 'reversed' or 'inverted'—derives from a momentous event that unfolded approximately four centuries ago. A catastrophic deluge caused the turbulent sea to breach the coastline, threatening to submerge the entirety of the coastal village. In the throes of absolute desperation, a fervent devotee invoked the Almighty, imploring immediate divine intervention to safeguard Guhagar from imminent ruin. In an extraordinary manifestation of celestial grace, the traditionally east-facing idol miraculously turned westward to confront the tempestuous waves, instantly pacifying the ocean and averting an impending disaster.

Situated merely 100 metres from the serene sands of Guhagar beach, the temple complex exudes an understated, timeless charm. Characterised by its modest dimensions and minimalist architecture, the sanctuary remains suffused with a palpable aura of spiritual serenity. The edifice beautifully preserves the traditional regional heritage of the Konkan coast, featuring a classic Kaularu (tiled) roof supported by an intricate, vintage timber framework.
